AHNLP Code of Ethics

The following guidelines apply to all members of The Association of Hypnosis and NLP (AHNLP), irrespective of their membership level.

The purpose of these guidelines is to outline the ethical responsibilities of AHNLP members.

Members are reminded that upholding ethical standards is a basic responsibility expected of all individuals in the association. 

NOTE: In the event of an members actions bringing the association into disrepute, the AHNLP reserves the right to terminate their membership/s immediately.

Code of Ethics

1. Commitment to Professionalism

  • All ‘members’ refers to both (individual & trainer) – shall uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and the community.

  • All members must maintain appropriate credentials, engage in ongoing professional development, and stay informed about advancements in hypnotherapy and coaching methodologies.

2. Client-Centered Approach

  • All members must prioritize the well-being, autonomy, and best interests of their clients at all times.

  • All members shall obtain informed consent before beginning any session or program, ensuring clients understand the nature, purpose, and potential outcomes of the services provided.

3. Confidentiality and Privacy

  • All members must respect and protect client confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Client information shall only be disclosed with explicit written consent, unless required by law or if there is an imminent risk of harm to the client or others.

4. Ethical Practice

  • All members must not engage in any form of discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, or other personal characteristics.

  • All forms of exploitation, abuse, or harassment are strictly prohibited.

  • All members shall avoid dual relationships or conflicts of interest that could impair professional judgment or harm the client.

5. Scope of Practice

  • All members must work within the boundaries of their training, qualifications, and expertise.

  • Referrals to appropriate professionals should be made when client needs exceed the scope of hypnotherapy or coaching.

6. Transparency and Honesty

  • All members must provide accurate and honest information about their qualifications, experience, and the services offered.

  • Advertising and promotional materials shall not include false, misleading, or exaggerated claims.

7. Client Safety and Well-Being

  • All members must ensure that the environment in which services are provided is safe, comfortable, and conducive to the client’s well-being.

  • All members must monitor for any adverse reactions or issues during sessions and respond appropriately.

8. Accountability

  • All members are responsible for their actions and must acknowledge and address any mistakes or ethical breaches.

  • Complaints or grievances from clients must be taken seriously, and appropriate steps should be taken to resolve them.

9. Professional Boundaries

  • All members must maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with clients to prevent dependency or misuse of the therapeutic relationship.

  • Personal relationships with current clients are prohibited to maintain objectivity and professionalism.

10. Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

  • All members shall strive to create an inclusive practice that respects and values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness must be integrated into all aspects of hypnotherapy and coaching.

11. Continuous Improvement

  • All members are encouraged to seek feedback from clients and peers to improve their practice.

  • Participation in peer supervision, professional networks, and ethical review processes is recommended to maintain accountability and professional growth.

12. Compliance with Laws and Regulations

  • All members must adhere to all local, national, and international laws and regulations applicable to hypnotherapy and coaching.

  • Any illegal or unethical behaviour must be reported to the appropriate authorities or governing bodies.

13. Termination of Services

  • All members must recognize when to terminate services, whether due to the completion of goals, lack of progress, or the client’s best interests.

  • Clients should be provided with appropriate referrals and resources if necessary.

14. Ethical Marketing and Financial Practices

  • Fees and payment policies must be clearly communicated and agreed upon before services begin.

  • All members shall not use high-pressure sales tactics or exploitative practices to gain clients.
